From Home Lab to Hosted Service

It started as a personal project — a server sitting in a corner, running Nextcloud and a few Docker containers. Friends and family wanted in. Then strangers did too.

Battleship Enterprises grew out of that home lab. Today it offers self-hosted cloud storage, photo backup, document management, password management, a private AI assistant, and a 3D print shop — all under one roof, all managed personally.

The goal has never changed: give people a private, reliable, affordable alternative to Big Tech cloud services, with the warmth of knowing there's a real human behind it all.

A few honest questions
Why trust a one-person operation?
Fair question. The tradeoff is real: there's no 24/7 call center. What you get instead is someone who actually knows every system personally, replies directly, and has no incentive to upsell you on things you don't need.
What happens if you're unavailable for a bit?
Infrastructure is built to keep running without hands-on intervention — automated backups, monitoring, and redundancy handle the day-to-day. Response times may occasionally be slower than 24 hours, but nothing depends on manual babysitting to stay online.
Is anything outsourced?
No — hosting, support, and builds are all handled directly. The only third parties involved are payment processing (Stripe) and shipping carriers.
Why self-host instead of using AWS or Google Cloud?
Control and honesty. Owning the hardware means no vendor lock-in, no surprise pricing changes, and no incentive to mine your data for ads. It also just means it's built by hand, not a corporate template.
